Community Tags!

Hey all, just a quick little note regarding the tagging system I want to implement for the community. Tagging on Dreamwidth works a lot like tagging on Tumblr and AO3, but what's great about DW is there's actually a tags page so you can peruse what's available! You can view the community tags page here!

So I find that the easiest way to tag any new post is to go ahead and post it, and then click the little icon to "edit tags" afterward, which will bring up a handy-dandy page with a list of all the tags that are available to you. You can ctrl+click on all applicable tags, and then hit "save changes", et voila! Your entry is now tagged, and you don't have to worry about memorizing all the tags or wondering if you missed one, because you'll be pulling from a list.

There are a few tag categories, and the list is already fairly long, so in an effort to avoid confusion, here's a quick rundown of how to tag!

First up is the "character appreciation" tag. Every month we'll highlight a specific character to appreciate, because that's what we do, so anything that is specific to or heavily leaning toward a focus on that particular character that is posted during the relevant month can be tagged this way.

There are a ton of "character:" tags, which are pretty self-explanatory. If the fic/art/discussion/whatever you are posting involves a certain character, tag them! That way, if someone is feeling starved for some content of their fave, they can just go straight to that tag and see everything we've shared that involves that character. If they're mostly background, then it's probably better to not tag them, because we all know how annoying it is when a fic tags like 47 characters but only three or four are featured prominently, so please use your best judgment. If multiple characters are featured as secondaries, there is a "character: ensemble" tag for exactly that purpose, for, say, the whole Radiant Garden crew being in one scene, but not much else, or for Mickey and Minnie and Daisy appearing for one conversation, but not much else. I will probably make a "character: organization 13" tag as well, for the same purpose but specifically the Organization.

After that, we have the "content:" tag, which is pretty much just what it says on the tin. This is for sharing fanworks of any sort. At this time there's only an art tag and a fic tag, but if other works show up, like cosplay, music, etc, tags will be added for them as well.

The next tag in the list is the "event:" tag. This is a mod-only tag! This is for official community events that will be posted at [fairly] regular intervals once we have a better idea of a community calendar. Please do not use this tag for any member-posted content. There will be some occasional overlap, but a mod will add this tag to relevant posts, so please don't use this tag header grouping, even if you feel it is appropriate to what you are posting.

Next up is the "meme:" tag! This is the member-events tag! Anything you want to post as an eventy sort of thing, please use the meme tag, to differentiate it from official community events. Right now there is only the friending meme tag, because we haven't had any others yet, but if you want to post a new sort of meme there is no tag for yet, please contact a mod so that a tag can be created for it! If you have an idea for a meme but aren't sure how to format it or whatever, please feel fee to talk to Cam about it, as Cam is the old hands at journal-based fandoming.

After that, there are a couple of standalone tags: nsfw and rules. The nsfw tag should be pretty self-explanatory. Please use that tag for any nsfw content, including but not limited to, smut fics, smut art, and any works containing more explicit themes that we don't want any kids accidentally walking into without warning. These posts should also be locked to the community so that they are not publicly viewable. If you are unsure how to do this or have any trouble, please contact Cam. The rules tag is another mod-only tag, so please do not use that tag, as it is only for updates/changes to the existing community rules.

Next up we have the "ship:" tag, which is also pretty much what it says on the tin. If what you're posting involves a ship in the forefront, tag it so that others can find or avoid it as they please. If you need a tag created for your ship, please contact a mod! There is also a "ship: gen" tag, for those works that aren't romantic in nature, so people can search for that as well.

The next two tags are also mod-only tags, for the two sticky posts, and for the templates post. Please do not use these tags unless you are instructed to do so by a mod.

Lastly, we have the "weeklies:" tags. These tags go on the little mini-events three days a week, and should be added to any content being posted for those specific themed days.

More tags will probably be added as time goes on, but for now, this is the lineup! Please tag responsibly, and it'll make everything nice and organized and easy to find in the future. Tagging on DW is a great way to archive works, links, and information, and it's much easier to navigate than Tumblr, so happy tagging, and happy browsing!!
